Leaning into the root causes of delays to access (healthcare system constraints and the subnational approval process), we believe the solution lies in healthcare system thinking and subnational access methodologies.

Our first principle of subnational access is that if patients are unable to reach the place in the care pathway or the clinic in the service where treatment is provided, then there is no patient access to medicine, no improved patient outcomes, and the value of innovative medicines is sub-optimally realised in the healthcare system.

PATHWAY TRANSFORMATION AND NEW MODELS OF CARE PLANNING IS CRITICAL PRE-LAUNCH WORK FOR ACCESS LEADERS

As new innovative medicines provide treatment options in previously unmet areas of need, patient access can be slowed down by regional and local care pathways that are not set up to deliver the treatment. Even in established pathways, fragmentation, bottlenecks and pressure points put substantial strain on the system.

Pathway transformation and new models of care planning is critical to patient access. These projects often take a minimum of 12-24 months to embed, so leaving this work until launch will see significant missed opportunities for pharmaceutical companies, healthcare systems and patients.
